An angled bob haircut for women is characterized by shorter hair in the back and longer hair around your face. The transition from short to long is gradual, creating an angled appearance.

What Is An Angled Bob?

An angled bob is a short haircut where the hair is cut at an angle, making it shorter in the back and gradually longer towards the front. There are many specific varieties of an angled bob, such as A-line, inverted, graduated, and stacked. It’s a versatile haircut that can be customized to work with every face shape and hair type.

The Best Angled Bob for Your Face Shape

Before I get into these recommendations, you need to understand face shapes. Scientists have indeed confirmed distinct face shapes and their traits. The thing is, each of us is 100% unique. (Source)

Don’t fret if your face shape doesn’t fall perfectly into one category. Go with the one closest to your face shape. You can also pick two if you’re split down the middle.

The most important step is confirming your face shape with your hairdresser. With that, you’re sure to get a fantastic result.

How to Get The Best Angled Bob Based Upon Your Face Shape:

  • Diamond. The goal is to make your cheekbones look less wide, creating the illusion of an oval shape. You’ll want voluminous layers near your jaw and temples, which creates that illusion.
  • Heart-Shaped. The goal is to make your forehead look smaller and round out your chin slightly. (Bangs are perfect for achieving this!) You should get a shoulder-skimming angled bob with no volume in the top but lots of bouncy layers around your face and ends.
  • Oval. Congratulations, you have the ideal face shape! You can truly wear any style of angled bob you want. Consider your routine and desired level of maintenance to make the best choice for you.
  • Round. The goal is to make your face look longer. You’ll want an angled bob with lots of volume on the top and crown area, but it stays sleek around your face.
  • Square. The goal is to add roundness to your features. Ask your stylist for layers that reduce volume around your temples and jaw but add bounce around your cheekbones.
  • Rectangle. The goal is to make your face look shorter and rounder, like an oval face shape. Ask for a chin-length angled bob with a good amount of volume on the sides but no height on top.

Hair Type Considerations for an Angled Bob

The best angled bob for your hair type

Your hair type has a huge influence on your angled bob’s upkeep.

When you find your perfect inspiration photo, consider how long it’d take to style it the same way. If you fall in love with an ultra-sleek and shiny inverted bob but have curly hair, styling will take a lot of time.

The Most Flattering Angled Bob Variations For Each Hair Type:

  • Wavy Hair: A stacked angled bob will help show off your waves. If you straighten your hair, ask for a longer cut with medium layers to reduce poofiness and frizz.
  • Curly Hair (including perms): A stacked A-line bob with many layers will bring the best out of your curls. Bangs can be hit or miss with this hair type. Ask for your stylist’s recommendation if you’re on the fence.
  • Coily Hair: Layers are your best friend for coily angled bobs. Ask for layers in the back, too, rather than graduation. This will create balanced volume, and the cut will still be flattering as it grows out.
  • Straight Hair (including relaxed hair): Inverted and A-line bobs give straight hair an edgy feel. For a softer style, ask for an inverted bob with layers and beveling through the sides.
  • Fine Hair: The shorter, the better for angled bobs on fine hair. Shorter styles will create more movement and volume in your hair. Asking for graduation in the back can help boost volume, too.
  • Thick and coarse Hair: Avoid taking your angled bob too short. Lots of layers for reducing weight and bulk are fine. But if you ask for something shorter than chin length, you’ll be stuck with a lot of volume and poofiness.
  • Gray Hair: The texture of your grays will impact which angled bob is right for you. A stacked angled bob will look gorgeous if your gray hairs are thick and wiry. You will only need to do a little daily styling. If your gray hairs are fine and soft, try a shoulder-skimming angled bob with side bangs. This will highlight your facial features.
  • Damaged or heavily processed hair: Cutting off the most damaged parts of your hair is the best thing you can do. An inverted angled bob won’t require daily use of hot tools, so your hair can recover a bit. You’ll also want lots of layers to reduce frizz and split ends.

How to Style an Angled Bob Haircut

How to style an angled bob
Instagram @ro.hsiqueira

The best thing about an angled bob is that it can be customized to suit any hair length, type, or texture. But I still have some styling tips for your new ‘do below.

Styling an Angled Bob on Fine to Medium Hair

The key to styling with this hair type is getting hold, volume, and texture. There’s nothing worse than noticing your hair has fallen flat halfway through the day. Luckily, the right products can keep your locks from ever looking limp.

My all-time favorite is Volumizing Spray Mousse. This brand has lived up to its name since its 1998 debut. I love this mousse because it adds much volume but won’t make your hair sticky or crunchy. Best of all, it’ll hold for up to 48 hours.

Focus the mousse on your roots. Then use a small amount on the rest of your hair. Set your blow dryer to low or medium, and use a round brush to dry your roots to get the most volume.

You can round brush your ends if you want a full, bouncy look or use a flat paddle brush to create sleekness.

Styling an Angled Bob on Thick or Damaged Hair

The struggle is real when you have thick hair! You want to get your hair dry and styled before your arms get exhausted. But going too fast with the blow dryer or hot tools can lead to a messy end result.

And the same is true for damaged or heavily processed hair. In this state, your hair takes longer to dry than when it’s healthy. (Source) You’re dealing with the same woes as someone with thick hair. Either way, you need a product that protects and tames your tresses to make styling easier.

That’s why I have to tell you about My Amazing Quick Dry Shake ‘n Spray. (And it is amazing.) This heat protectant will reduce your hair’s drying time—whether air or blow dry. It’s also 100% vegan, rich in amino acids, and fights tangles and frizz… I could go on.

After your hair is dry, style it with any hot tools you’d like. In my experience, using this product also reduces how long it takes to curl or straighten my hair.

Styling an Angled Bob of Wavy, Curly, or Coily Hair

How you style an angled bob with waves, curls, or coils depends on your goal. You can completely straighten it into a gorgeous, sleek style with a blow dryer and flat iron. Or you can embrace your texture and enjoy a super low-maintenance daily routine.

If you want to smooth out your locks, I suggest Oribe Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream. It’s pricey, but it’s worth it.

Heat damage can cause breakage and split ends to your already-fragile texture. This blowout cream will reduce dry time, help straighten, reduce frizz, and boost shine.

If you want to go natural, you only need to scrunch with a good product. My favorite is Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Styling Cream. It’ll amplify your curls, waves, or coils—especially when you take the time to scrunch after washing.

And it’ll protect your angled bob from frizz, humidity, and UV damage all day. I love how lightweight and non-greasy this cream is, especially considering how much it does for my hair.

Maintaining Your Angled Bob Haircut

Maintaining an angled bob
Instagram @hairgirl541

Maintaining your angled bob is one of the most important things to consider. Extremely dramatic inverted versions require daily styling and frequent trims, for example.

That’s why I broke down maintenance into the levels below. By considering your face shape, hair type, and desired level of upkeep, you’ll get a perfect haircut.

Haircut frequency:

  • You want to visit the salon as little as possible. Ask for an inverted bob without any graduation or stacking. The inversion will help the cut last longer. And stacked bobs need frequent trims. Whether you’re busy with work, kids, or just the chaos of life, this cut will always look great.
  • You don’t mind getting trims every couple months or so. A graduated or A-line bob will create the feeling of effortless style. Ask your stylist to avoid going super dramatic with the stacking or angle. These types of angled bobs need trimming every 8 to 10 weeks.
  • You’re happy to stop by for quick cleanups often. You can go as bold as you’re comfortable with. Experiment with trendy bangs, shaving the back extremely short, a dramatic angle, or all 3 to find a style that matches your bold personality.

Daily styling:

  • On a good hair day, you can roll out of bed and be ready in 2 minutes. Request a soft, lived-in angled bob without sharp lines. This type is perfect if you’re a busy mom!
  • You’ll spend 10 or 15 minutes doing your hair whenever you have to go out. Try an inverted angled bob without graduation. Ask for short to medium layers to curl your hair, or wear it straight.
  • You’re fine spending up to an hour primping each morning. You’ll want to choose an angled bob that suits your face shape. But otherwise, do whatever you want! Try many variations if you’re willing to blow dry, straighten, or curl your hair daily.

The Most Popular Angled Bob Haircut Ideas:

There are plenty of unique ways you can get an angled bob. Below, I’ve compiled photos of some of the best angled bob haircuts and hairstyles to inspire you!

Fresh Cut Angled Bob Hairstyle
Instagram @zori83du

#1: Fresh Cut Bob

Angled bob hairstyles don’t need to be high maintenance, or they can be as high as you want, making them fun and versatile. For back-to-school moms that are frazzled in the morning but want to look like they have it together, you don’t have to worry anymore; angled haircuts are for you.

#2: Angled Bob with Light Grey Balayage

Are you an older woman with short straight hair looking for a stylish refresh? Consider an angled bob with light grey balayage. This cut combines a classic shape with a trendy twist. It’s perfect for those who want to update their look without going too edgy. The grey balayage adds dimension and depth to the cut without overpowering the style. I suggest using a shine serum to give your hair a beautiful glow. This style is a chic and playful option for any occasion.

Crisp Angled Bob with Natural Color for older women embracing their aging hair
Instagram @waves_salon

#3: Crisp Angled Bob with Natural Color

A crisp angled bob is a chic way to embrace your natural color while staying youthful. I suggest a crisp shape for any silver hair style. This allows you to stay modern. Using a blue or violet shampoo to brighten your silver is also key. The best purple shampoo is Loma’s violet shampoo. I love this specific one because of its ability to have blue and purple tones in one shampoo. That way, you can neutralize yellow and orange.

#4: Dimensional Long-Angled Bob

This is a dimensional blonde with soft, ash-gold tones on a long angled bob. I recommend such bob cuts for women with a natural level 5 or higher, with a light to medium skin tone. I also recommend it for women who love the outdoors or the beach.

Medium-Length Angled Bob Haircut

#5: Medium-Length Angled Bob Haircut

This alluring sliced bob cut is a collarbone length, slightly angled in the front with no layering. If you have a ton of hair, you’ll have to wear it blown out, smooth, or air-dried to achieve the look. This medium-length hair fits any face shape, and the length is what you want to consider when achieving it. Some face shapes will require you to keep the length longer, such as a collarbone, while others look great at a shorter length.

I always recommend not to over-style your hairdo when achieving a look at home. Think less is more. Angled bobs make for versatile styling. To style, use Bumble and Bumble invisible oil for frizz control and a UV protectant, and also use a great texture spray such as Sally Hershberger 24K Supreme Stylist to add texture.

#6: Grey Angled Cut for Thin Hair

A grey angled cut for thin hair is a way to keep your hair stylish when not coloring it. Ask for a bob haircut that enhances your volume. Make sure you schedule upkeep every 4-6 weeks with your stylist. I use a thermal protectant spray on dry hair to create a flat iron curl for a soft, smooth wave. If you want a nice finishing product on your style, I use the Bumble and Bumble classic hair spray. It will keep the style going all day.

Short Angled Bob for Thick Hair
Instagram @yp_hair

#7: Short Bob for Thick Hair

A short bob for thick tresses will look great. However, your hair must be thinned out a lot to sit correctly. You should know a chic short bob cut will require a good amount of styling with a blow dryer and flat iron. Before styling womens bob haircuts, use a smoothing cream and heat protector to withstand the heat for minimal damage.

#8: Short Choppy Angled Bob

If your hair lacks shape and has some holes in the perimeter, I suggest getting a cut immediately. This will help to halt further breakage. A short angled bob is a great option for redirecting the angles where the shape can showcase a healthy style.

Modern Angled Bob Cut with a Bright Money Piece

#9: Modern Angled Cut with a Bright Money Piece

If you can add more maintenance to your hairstyle, a money piece will create a fun cut. When you ask for a money piece, talk with your stylist about how bright you want the color. Also, note how thick you want it to be.

#10: Gorgeous Light Blonde Angled Bob Cut

A gorgeous light blonde angled bob cut is one of those timeless styles. Blondes and bobs never go out of style; they’re classic. With an angled bob, you will typically find that the back is longer and has more layers than the front. This helps create the sharpness of the line toward your face. I suggest finding a stylist who specializes in bob hairstyles for women. Not everyone can cut a perfect bob.

Buttery Blonde Thick Angled Bob

#11: Buttery Blonde Thick Angled Bob

Angled bobs are perfect for fine hair and thick-haired clients looking for a change. Pay attention to your lines when cutting this style, though. It would be best if you had clean partings for that perfect angle. You can finish this look sleek or try adding beachy curls for a more voluminous look.

#12: Angled Inverted Bob

An angled inverted bob is a great haircut for women who want a more dynamic, gorgeous, and sharp-looking hairstyle. Such bob hair cuts can be sleek and smooth for a classic and elegant look. Add some beachy waves and volume.

Angled Bob for Older Women

#13: Angled Bob for Older Women

A fabulous angled bob for older women is both stylish and youthful. Angled bobs are easily styled with a blow-dryer and round brush. Using the correct smoothing product will give sleek gray hair a trendy look and soften a round face.

#14: Noticeable Long Angled Bob with Bangs

A super soft cut styled sleek with straight bangs is fantastic. This adorable angled bob hairstyle with bangs will leave you feeling flirty all day!

#15: Trendy Medium Angled Bob with Layers

#16: Angled Long Bob

Can’t decide if you want to stay long or much shorter? This inspiring angled lob gives you the best of both worlds, with deceivingly long layers in front hitting at chin-length and manageable mid-length layers in the back.

#17: The Cutest Short Angled Bob

Opt for a dark brown base to the ends. As it almost looks like it could be the model’s natural brunette hair with some classy, subtle highlights. This angled haircut is versatile for so many face shapes. The asymmetry can be suitable for round to square face shapes. Side bangs are also an option for women who want to have it. In this case, the model in the picture has a soft side-swept fringe.

Some stylists recommend an undercut with this bob shape because it allows the weight line to be definite, and with no hair pushing out from underneath, it grows out better. This is definitely for more of a trendy woman who isn’t afraid to go short in the nape. The styling is quite versatile. It does require some work, such as blow-drying with a smoothing lotion and heat protectant spray on the ends. Use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner to keep the color looking rich and healthy.

Fun & Flirty Bob
Instagram @sylvias.styles

#18: Fun & Flirty Bob

This is a fun and flirty bob! It’s a versatile style perfect for an everyday look or a night out! I love the texture of the beach waves. They fall so soft and effortlessly. This type of bob looks very flattering on any face shape and with any hair texture. It fits any lifestyle because it’s easy to style straight or wavy. Make sure you find a good hairdresser comfortable with texturizing for thick hair. This type of cut must be thinned out and texturized for it to lay and style right.

To recreate these boldly angled hairstyles, apply a mousse like the Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse and a smoothing serum like Paul Mitchell Super Skinny before blow-drying. This will internally lock in your style, create volume, add heat protection, and eliminate any frizz. Once fully dry, spray Bed Head Masterpiece Hairspray and comb through. Then, starting from the bottom and working toward the crown (top) of the head, section your hair horizontally and curl one-inch vertical sections with a 1 1/4-inch curling iron. When you curl, make sure to leave the tail end out. This is the secret to that beachy wave! Once we curl the entire head, spray a light mist of hairspray and allow it to dry and cool for 30 seconds. Comb your hair out with your fingers, and you’re all set! You can use rollers if you’re old school and don’t have a curling iron.

Shiny Jet Black Angled Bob Hairstyle
Instagram @yp_hair

#19: Shiny Jet Black Angled Bob

This is an eye-catching angled bob haircut. My favorite thing about the look is the contrast. I recommend this angled bob for women looking to express themselves and be comfortable in their skin.

#20: An Edgy Take on a Classic Bob

This is an edgy version of a classic look. You can never go wrong with a classic bob. My favorite thing about an angled bob is that any lady can have it. I recommend a root lifting spray, foam, and a smoothing cream for the ends. Of course, everyone’s hair is different, so ultimately, it depends on your hair type. An impressive haircut can be created in many ways on many different types of hair. You need a heat protector to save your hair from any hot tools used, a soft paddle brush for the initial blow-dry, and a round brush or flat iron to finish if needed.

All ages and lifestyles love this inverted bob haircut because of its versatility. It can be worn in many different ways (wavy, curly, or straight) and even can be put back (at least partially). Any face shape can wear this angled bob cut. You just need to adjust the angle and weight of your hair. It can hide problem spots or define facial features. It’s an easy cut to take care of for 99% of ladies. With that being said, if you have coarse, frizzy hair, you might have to spend a little more time with it. It’s a short cut, so no more than 15 minutes should be needed to polish your style.

#21: Fun Short Textured Bob

This is a fun short textured bob full of personality. The best thing about it is that you can style it in multiple ways, and it’s great for any hair type and texture. Try using Aveda Volumizing Tonic for lightweight volume. Pair it with Aveda New Texture Tonic to add a soft, movable texture. It’s great for straight or curly hair.

This lovely cut works great for any hair type, texture, and density. It can soften a strong jawline if you have one. This blonde inverted bob is a great on-the-go style but can easily be dressed with loose curls if desired.

#22: Sleek Angled Bob with Sharp Lines

This cut is a beautiful, sleek, angled bob haircut that never goes out of fashion. The best thing about this spectacular style is the sharp lines. It’s the perfect balance of short and voluminous at the back but keeps the appearance of length around the face if needed.

This cute long angled bob haircut is for all women, no matter your hair texture or age. It can be adapted to every woman. It’s a timeless look that can be styled sleek or textured.

medium-length angled bob
Instagram @david.oshell

#23: Medium-Length Angled Bob

This is one of the most wonderful medium-length angled bob cuts. It’s a low-maintenance hairstyle that is full of modern style. Angled bob hairstyles are the best short haircuts. Use a serum to keep ends smooth and add high shine and a root boost for volume. A great serum is Loma Fortifying Tonic. It helps repair your hair while adding protection and shine. The trick to making hair look healthy is shine! Try a volume spray like Kenra Root Lifting Spray. It adds a lot of volume without making your hair feel sticky. Use a medium-sized round brush during the blow-dry to add max volume and flat iron to smooth the ends straight.

#24: Power Bob

I describe this cut as the new classic. It’s a modern take on an a-line cut with blunt lines and internal layering to create a sleek but soft shape. To recreate this style, use Goldwell hair color and Goldwell Duel Senses shampoo and conditioner to maintain the tone. Because this length is universally flattering and the color is low-maintenance, I recommend this to many women. Depending on hair type, you could customize this style for each girl using different layering.

nicely stacked angled bob with blonde highlights
Instagram @nacirsomera

#25: Nicely Stacked Angled Bob with Blonde Highlights

Go for a bob with low graduation (or stack) in the back and a point-cut perimeter to create a soft edge. Consider blonde highlights to enhance the shape of your haircut to make it stylish.

Anytime you get a haircut, it should be a custom creation to enhance or play down features. This haircut looks the best on narrow, oval, and heart-shaped faces but can be adjusted to work with most shapes. Texture-wise, this cut works best on straight to slightly wavy hair. Overall, this cut works great for most lifestyles. It’s polished enough for a professional setting, or add a little sass with some flat irons curls for a girl’s night.

timeless angled bob cut
Instagram @nacirsomera

#26: Timeless Bob

This cut is classic and timeless. It can be flattering to most face shapes and hair types. We recommend Organic Pure Care products. Their products are incredible, but we recommend the Volumizing Spray, Volumizing Foam, and Hydrating Shiny Spray to achieve this look. The long lengths in the front could help balance any roundness in the face, but this is a very versatile cut and can be worn by women with naturally curly, wavy, or straight hair.

#27: Long Angled Bob with Layers

This is an angled long bob haircut. I love this haircut because you can wear it straight or style it with soft beach waves. The long layers in your haircut help create volume and add extra movement through your hair when worn curled. An angled layered bob haircut is so great because it works on any hair type or face shape.

I recommend leaving the layers longer for ladies with coarse, curly hair. For ladies with fine/limp hair, the layers can be cut shorter to help create more volume and movement through your hair. This haircut is very versatile as well. It can be styled straight, naturally curly, curled with a curling iron, or even thrown up in a half-up topknot.

Slightly Angled Lob Cut
Instagram @angelaschrader

#28: Slightly Angled Lob

This is an angled lob with a slight, subtle angle and tapered ends that are perfect for tousling and usually very flattering on all hair types! This lob is such a feminine look that it is very versatile and can be a successful style for the businesswoman in the office or an effortless look for the beach babe! It can be cool, casual, sophisticated, or runway fierce.

It’s easy to cater this cut to different face shapes and hair types. For example, you could add a little fringe and leave length around the face to eliminate any round facial features…the list goes on! There are many options in customizing which lob look is best for you.

#29: No-Fuss Wavy Angled Bob Cut

Go for a versatile, lived-in, a-line bob cut. These days the term “lived-in” is used to describe a no-fuss, ready-to-go hairstyle, and this cut comes closest to that. The best thing about it is that it can be worn classically straight and smooth by an executive or curled for a younger, more playful look.

Use Neuma Afghan treatment for shine and softness, Unite Elevate mousse for body and control, and finish the angled style with a texturizing spray! Always use a texturizing spray or paste for the lived-in look. This cut works best with medium to fine hair. Faces of all shapes can wear it because of its versatility and depending on how it’s styled and worn.

#30: Glossy Blunt Bob

A glossy blunt bob is a modern cut that showcases a blunt look, a subtle ombre, characterizing lines and smoothness that show versatility and boldness.

Stylish Blonde Lob
Instagram @qtran

#31: Stylish Blonde Lob

This hairstyle is classic and stylish. It appeals to all types of women because it’s versatile and easy to pull off. The best thing about it is all the options it has. This cut can be kept smooth or waved for a stylish look. The cut looks amazing with great hair color.

For styling, you can use a smoothing serum added to damp hair and blow dry it if you want to. More can be used when hair is dry to polish it even more. A volumizing mousse is a great idea as well. A heat protectant spray is a must if you use a flat iron.

This cut is very flattering to many. However, the best girl would have to have a density on the sides to pull off the angle. Remember that thicker hair tends to be best if you’ve got thick hair. Other textures could also work but require effort to lay correctly. This cut also does require maintenance to keep it laying nicely.

#32: Blunt Angled Bob

The lines serve the look! Stylist Melanie gave a precision cut that has movement and body.

Beautiful Angled Bob
Instagram @saekoshairwork

#33: Beautiful Angled Bob

Go for an angled bob! Ask your stylist if they have the Surface Hair razor to create fun textures for the maximum versatility in your angled bob haircut. It helps create a beautiful and easy style wearing beachy waves or smooth.

This cut is for women looking for a low-maintenance style. It’s great for almost any face shape and texture. Depending on the technique, using the razor can help add volume for fine hair and remove weight for thick hair. The beachy waves are a great way to add to your look.

#34: Sleek Shoulder-Length Angled Bob

This is a shoulder-length, sleek angled bob. I love the distinct, crisp lines that create the shape! My favorite thing about an angled bob is the versatility that comes with it. It can be styled in so many ways!

A sleeker bob is best for women with naturally straight hair or women willing to work to style their hair smoothly to enhance that angle. However, this type of cut can generally be styled wavy, curly, or textured! The best thing about a cut like this is that it’s flattering for every face shape and can be customized for every guest!

Bright Angled Bob Hairstyle
Instagram @tanjas_hair

#35: Bright Angled Bob

This is an easy-to-wear, fresh and bright look. In general, angled bob haircuts are quite easy to style (most of the time), and this particular look doesn’t require too much attention since your hair is short and not very thick. This is a practical look for women who don’t want to spend so much time in front of the mirror, and that’s one of my favorite things about it. It’s also the type of look that needs a trim at least every three months since the shape of the haircut changes every month.

I recommend this angled bob for women who don’t have thick hair or for ladies who want to have short hair but still not too short or boring. The bob haircut is much easier to blow dry and give volume than if your hair is worn thin, long, and flat. I recommend the most popular angled bobs for ladies with round, oval, and round-shaped faces. It is not so much for ladies with a long faces since this specific haircut is longer in front, symmetrical, and a bit angled. It will give the feeling that the face is even longer.

#36: Sleek Angled Bob with Red Panels

This is an angled, sleek bob. My favorite thing about it is the color. Angled bobs don’t need a lot of colors, but the way the red panels peep through is beautiful! Kenra Silkening Gloss and Lanza Brush Through Hairspray were the perfect products for this angled bob. I recommend this to women who want their hair to look thicker or wear a short sassy style.

#37: Texturized Balayaged Angled Lob

I would call this look a texturized, long bob with balayage. Angled bobs have all of the dimensions and texture! I painted on Schwarzkopf Blonde Me bleach and texturized the hair with scissors and a razor. Lastly, I curled the hair with my favorite BioIonic curling iron and sprayed it with a texture spray. This would be a great look for fine or medium-texture hair. With this style, you should be prepared to style your hair daily. It’s a supercut for women who want to try a shorter length.
